What are the Common Core Standards?

July 16, 2012|Posted in: Education

We recently came across a great resource that explains to parents and educators the Common Core Standards initiative.  According to the information on the site and other sites linked to it, the Common Core Standards are state initiatives to introduce state-wide teaching standards in the fields of math and English.  The standards were developed by a country-wide group of teachers, educators and community leaders, with the involvement of many organizations.  Since the standards are adopted by states, there can be significant variation among the final versions adopted by the individual states.  As of now, 45 states and 3 territories have adopted a version of the Common Core Standards.  Regardless of the variations, the Common Core Standards are set to introduce the much needed common foundation of knowledge that students can build upon in later stages of their education.
