On June 22, 2012, the New York State legislators passed a law that makes kindergarten mandatory for all 5-year olds living in New York City. Previously, nearly 3,000 kids entered the first grade without first having gone to kindergarten. Early childhood education has enormous benefits for children. Starting this September, the school officials will no longer be able to turn away kids because of lack of space and lack of requirement that they attend kindergarten. From now on, for all 5-year olds living in New York City the first day of school will start this year, on September 6, 2012. For more information, read this article in The New York Times.
